The publisher and data controller
The Daily African Lens is an AI intelligence publication covering artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science developments across the 54 African Union member states. It is published by 1906 Reblabs, a South African media and technology project.
For the purposes of applicable data protection law — including South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA) and, where applicable, the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) — 1906 Reblabs is the responsible party and data controller.

Information collected and why
We collect the minimum data necessary to operate the publication. We do not run advertising, sell data, or build user profiles.
The short version: If you visit the archive only, we collect no personal data directly. If you subscribe to the newsletter via Substack, Substack collects your email address and Substack manages that relationship under their own privacy policy.
In detail, data interactions fall into three categories:
- Newsletter subscription (email address). When you subscribe via Substack, your email address is collected and stored by Substack, Inc. We receive aggregated delivery and open-rate statistics but do not receive or store individual subscriber email addresses on our own systems. Substack's privacy policy governs this data: substack.com/privacy.
- Website access logs (server logs). This archive is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub may collect standard server log data — including IP addresses, browser type, and page request timestamps — in the ordinary course of serving web content. We do not have access to this log data. GitHub's privacy statement governs it: GitHub Privacy Statement.
- Correspondence and tips. If you contact us directly with tips, corrections, or partnership enquiries, we retain the content of that communication and your contact details solely for the purpose of responding and maintaining editorial records. This data is not shared with third parties.
Why we are permitted to process your data
We rely on the following legal bases under applicable law:
- POPIA · GDPR Consent — for newsletter subscriptions. You actively opt in by subscribing via Substack. You may withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing using the link in any edition.
- POPIA · GDPR Legitimate interests — for retaining editorial correspondence. We have a legitimate interest in maintaining records of corrections, tips, and partnership discussions for the integrity of our editorial operation.
- GDPR Note for EU/EEA readers: If you are located in the European Union or European Economic Area, GDPR applies to any processing of your personal data by us. Our lawful bases are as stated above (Article 6(1)(a) and 6(1)(f) GDPR). We do not transfer personal data outside the EU/EEA except as handled by Substack and GitHub under their own transfer mechanisms (Standard Contractual Clauses).
- POPIA Note for South African readers: Under POPIA, we process personal information only for the specific, explicitly defined and legitimate purposes set out in this policy, and only for as long as necessary for those purposes.

Rights you hold over your personal information
Depending on your location, you have some or all of the following rights:
- Access. You may request confirmation of whether we hold personal data about you and, if so, a copy of that data.
- Correction. You may request that inaccurate or incomplete personal data held by us be corrected.
- Deletion. You may request that we delete personal data we hold about you, subject to our legitimate interests in retaining editorial correspondence records.
- Objection. You may object to processing based on legitimate interests. We will cease that processing unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds that override your interests.
- Withdrawal of consent. Where processing is based on consent (newsletter subscription), you may withdraw consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal. Unsubscribe links appear in every edition.
- Portability. GDPR Article 20 and POPIA Section 24 provide rights to receive your personal data in a structured, commonly used format where processing is automated.
- Complaint. You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In South Africa: the Information Regulator. In the EU: your relevant data protection authority.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the details in Section 08 below. We will respond within 30 days in accordance with POPIA requirements.
How long we keep your data
- Newsletter subscription data is retained by Substack for as long as your subscription is active. Upon unsubscribing, Substack's standard data retention schedule applies.
- Editorial correspondence (tips, corrections, partnership enquiries) is retained for a maximum of three years from the date of the last communication, after which it is deleted unless there is an ongoing editorial matter that requires retention.
- GitHub access logs are retained by GitHub according to their own policies, which we do not control.
How we notify you of changes
We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, applicable law, or the services we use. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last reviewed" date at the top of this page and note the change in the next available edition of The Daily African Lens newsletter.
Continued use of the archive or newsletter after the effective date of any update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
